But, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Hall of Fame, the public will be allowed to vote on nominees for the first time ever.
From now until July 2, people can submit nominees to the World Series of Poker website.
The voting form will include a space for the name of a nominee and up to 250 words supporting the nominee’s case.
During the 2009 WSOP Main Event, Harrah’s Entertainment will announce the top 10 nominees chosen by the public, and those 10 nominees will then be amongst consideration for the Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame committee will then review the list of public nominees and determine if anyone should be added to the list, including non-players that have contributed to poker’s growth as a major sport.
The 16 living Hall of Fame members will be contacted in September, and each living legend will rank the nominees in order of preference.
Each Hall of Famer can also add a write-in candidate to be added for consideration in 2010.
A select number of media members will also vote on the nominees using the same process.

But neither Greg Raymer nor Ted Forrest scare chipleader Isaac Haxton.
“The internet kids are the ones I’m worried about,” Haxton told PokerListings.com.
“[Alec] Torelli’s a really good player and so is Dani Stern. Justin Bonomo is a good friend of mine and he’s an excellent player.”
All of the above will join Team PokerStars’ Lex Veldhuis, Full Tilt’s Vitaly Lunkin and Noah “fouruhaters” Schwartz at the nine-handed final table tomorrow.
A murderer’s row, to be sure, but the 2007 World Poker Tour PokerStars Caribbean Adventure runner-up likes his chances.
“I feel great heading into tomorrow,” he said. “I have one-quarter of the chips in play and my seat at the table is not so bad.”
Haxton entered the day among the short stacks with 540,000 to his name, but quickly managed to pull his head above water with a timely treble.
As rivals Andrew Robl, Neil Channing, Andy Black and Brian Townsend succumbed and the potential prize money increased, Haxton built his stack with a bit of small-ball poker.
“I had kings versus queens against Matt Marafioti and busted him for 600k, but it was mostly small pots after that,” he said.
Sitting on an average stack when the field consolidated into a ten-handed final table, Haxton took advantage of a fortunate flop to seize control of the tournament.
Holding pocket sixes, Haxton flopped bottom set against then-chipleader Alec Torelli, who had flopped top pair and tried in vain to bully his rival from the pot.
Haxton persisted and doubled through, building his stack up over the 5 million mark and taking the chip lead.
A few rounds later, Tony G was eliminated in tenth place and the final table was set.
“I feel fantastic [about making the final table],” Haxton told PokerListings. “It’s great.
“I’m not going to say that it makes me think I’m a much better player than I thought I was a couple of days ago or that it’s anything more than me making the final table in a World Series event, but it definitely feels great.”
fellow finalist Justin Bonomo, Haxton told PL.com he thought the level of play in the tournament was somewhat uneven.
“These really big buy-in tournaments have a polarizing effect on the fields,” he said. “The high buy-in prices out a lot of the winning - but not high-stakes - online players but there are plenty of rich amateurs who are as willing to play a $40k event as a $10k one.
“There’s a high percentage of good players but an assortment of amateurs as well.”
With nearly 6 million in chips heading into the final table, Haxton holds a nearly 1.5 million advantage over second-place Vitaly Lunkin and is in great shape to prove Joe Sebok a prophet.
The Poker Road president Haxton would take down a bracelet this year in an article for PokerListings last week.
If the Lizard King can keep his composure in tomorrow’s pit of vipers, the bracelet is his for the taking.

Early on in today’s Day 1a it was announced the WSOP’s $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em economic stimulus event was a sell-out and somewhere near 6,000 are expected to play.
The exact numbers won’t be known until tomorrow, but the tournament, designed as a response to the US recession, will easily eclipse the previous record of 3,929 players in a $1,500 event last year.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better turnout,” said WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack. “The demand for the Stimulus Special was felt the moment we announced it.”
But this is not the only record that’s been broken over the first few days of the WSOP.
The one-time $40,000 buy-in commemorative event drew 201 players creating a record prize pool for events outside of a Main Event of $8 million on Thursday.
Plus, the entrants record for an Omaha 8 event fell when Thursday’s $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo got saw 918 register.
“I think this tournament is a great indicator that poker is alive and well at least for this weekend,” said Pollack.
Respected Online MTT pro and WSOP bracelet holder James “mig.com” Mackey is a big fan of the tournament.
“I like it,” he said. “It basically replaced the $1,500 from last year so it’s not that big of a deal. I might have a problem if they dropped the buy-in below $1,000. Really I would prefer to have a large number of big buy-in events.”
However, the tournament has an even bigger affect on players like Drew Becker from Charlotte, North Carolina, who decided to play in his first WSOP event because of the price.
“It was a lot of fun,” said Becker. “There are a lot of people who might not be able to play a WSOP event if it wasn’t for the buy-in.”
Despite a bad beat to knock him out, Becker was hopeful that he would return for another $1,000 event next year.
The total prize pool for the tournament is expected to be at least $5 million and the winner will walk away with over 750 times their original investment.

But his latest project - Black Belt Poker - still has him sweating a little.
“I must admit I have a few butterflies,” said Channing, who cashed seven times at the 2008 WSOP, twice at the WSOPE in London and backed several players who made big scores.
The concept is relatively simple.
is a UK-based social networking site with a heavy poker bias, where a mix of experienced and inexperienced players gather to swap strategies and pass on the benefits of their wisdom.
Plus, for the elite players, there is the juicy lure of a possible $70k sponsorship package.
Over the last few months, fifty hopeful contenders have battled it out in a gruelling “grading” process to prove their mettle and win one of the eight packages on offer.
Now the posturing is over.
The choices have been made and Channing is optimistic his team is poised and ready to take on Las Vegas and the 2009 WSOP.
“They’ve got 50 shots at a bracelet, which means they’re going to be about 8-1 to win one I would say,” he said.
Channing is already setting the pace, having reached the latter stages of the prestigious $40k Commemorative Event.
In typically sardonic fashion, he played down his chances before busting 20th for $70k.
But Channing’s self-effacing assessment belies the extraordinary form he showed last year.
Having already picked up the Irish Open title, he took last year’s WSOP by storm.
In fact, if Nikolay Evdakov hadn’t pipped the Englishmen to the post setting a record with ten WSOP cashes, Channing would have made even bigger headlines.
“I always see him around,” Channing laughed. “I played with him twice and he just cashes in everything. He runs so good.”
The staking also went well, most notably when Irishmen Marty Smyth collected the 2008 WSOP $10k Omaha bracelet.
If the Black Belt Poker team can replicate this success, it will be another year to remember for Channing, although it seems unlikely he will be able to take another shot at a world-record number of cashes.
“I’m going to be so busy this year,” he said. “I’ll be watching over the team, sorting some things out for them, playing a bit, but I won’t have as much time as last year.”
As far as the Vegas nightlife and the myriad poker parties are concerned, Channing said he’ll take a pass this year.
“If I miss two PokerStars Pros making out at a party, it will be all over the internet in minutes anyway,” he joked.
“I’m just going to go swimming every day, spend some time relaxing and looking after the team. It should be a great series.”
